Arsenal beat Brentford FC 2:0 on Wednesday to maintain their lead atop the Premier League.
The breakthrough came in the 11th minute when Mikel Merino rose to head home a precise cross by Ben White. Merino has now scored in two consecutive games for the club. Merino has been converted from a central midfielder to the centre of Arsenal’s attack due to injuries to Viktor Gyokores, Kai Havertz, and Gabriel Jesus.
The hosts looked to control the game, but Brentford kept the pressure on through the first half.
Arsenal remained composed all through the game. Substitute Bukayo Saka helped seal the result for Arsenal with a composed finish in stoppage time.
Just a day before the match, Arteta had called for Arsenal fans to turn up “like animals” at the Emirates Stadium to help roar his team to victory.
Arsenal were without injured centre-backs William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, but the Gunners were able to keep their first clean sheet in five matches.
Arsenal are now unbeaten in their last 18 games in all competitions as they chase a first English title since 2004. The victory restores Arsenal’s five-point lead over Manchester City FC, giving them 33 points from 14 games.
