Billboard has announced a major change to how music charts are calculated. The update will begin with charts dated January 17, 2026. These charts will reflect listening data recorded between January 2 and January 8. The update affects both the Billboard 200 and the Hot 100.
How Album Streams Will Be Counted
Under the new rule, one album unit will equal 1,000 paid or subscription streams. Ad-supported streams will require 2,500 plays to count as one album unit. This replaces the previous thresholds of 1,250 paid streams and 3,750 ad-supported streams. In its announcement, Billboard said the update would “better reflect an increase in streaming revenue and changing consumer behaviours.”
Hot 100 Streaming Adjustments
Billboard also confirmed changes to how streams are weighted on the Hot 100 chart. The ratio between paid or subscription streams and ad-supported streams will now stand at 1 to 2.5. The company said the revised ratio will also apply to related song consumption and streaming charts.
Impact On Hip-Hop And Streaming-Led Genres
The revised formula is expected to influence genres that rely heavily on streaming performance. Hip-hop and R&B releases often generate strong paid and ad-supported streaming numbers across platforms.
