Xania Monet has become the first artificial intelligence-driven act to debut on a Billboard radio airplay chart.

The single, “How Was I Supposed to Know?,” enters at No. 30 on the Adult R&B Airplay ranking. The debut follows a 28% jump in audience impressions across the U.S.

The track was created by Mississippi poet and design studio owner Telisha “Nikki” Jones. The production was made using the Suno AI platform, with Jones penning part of the lyrics. The song’s viral momentum, including a No. 1 peak on Billboard’s R&B Digital Song Sales chart, led to a reported multimillion-dollar deal with Hallwood Media.

The success arrives amid industry debate over AI’s role in music.

However, the rapid rise has drawn criticism from established human artistes. Singer Kehlani publicly expressed opposition, saying, “Nothing and no one on Earth will ever be able to justify AI to me.”

Monet’s team remains focused on growth, with Murphy adding, “Our goal is to continue to grow, continue to connect and hopefully get to No. 1.”
