Singer SZA is taking action to support families in the United States struggling through the government shutdown. Through her organisation, NOT Charity, she has joined forces with Los Angeles restaurant Jon & Vinny’s to provide 1,400 free meals for Americans relying on food assistance.
The initiative focuses on recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, whose benefits have been disrupted by the U.S. government shutdown. Started on Tuesday, Jon & Vinny’s Slauson Avenue branch will distribute 100 dinner packages for two each day until Monday, 17 November.
Recipients are asked to email notcharity@jonandvinnys.com to register, with up to four meals available per household. Meals will be given out daily between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. SZA personally contacted the restaurant last week, transforming her idea into an immediate effort to feed those in need.
In her announcement, SZA said she wanted to share her love for Jon & Vinny’s food with the community. The restaurant confirmed her role in launching the project, describing it as a genuine effort to help people facing food insecurity.
The initiative comes as about 5.5 million Californians remain uncertain about their SNAP benefits amid the record 42-day U.S. government shutdown. Many families have turned to food banks and charities to survive the crisis.
