Manchester United ended a nine-year wait for a win at Anfield as Harry Maguire headed home in the 84th minute to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory over Liverpool on Sunday.
United struck early when Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring just 63 seconds after kickoff, converting a quick break from Amad Diallo. Liverpool pushed back and equalized in the 78th minute through Cody Gakpo, who tapped in Federico Chiesa’s cross.
Maguire’s winner came at the 84th minute from a Bruno Fernandes corner, as the defender rose above Ibrahima Konate to nod home the header that ended United’s barren run at Anfield.
After the game, Maguire remarked: “It means everything … I’ve been here seven years now and to come to this ground every time and not get three points has been tough. So it’s for the fans … I hope they have a great night tonight.”
The win lifts United into 9th place with 13 points, while Liverpool slip to 4th with 15 points, four
behind early leaders Arsenal.
