Man City Held to Goalless Draw by Sunderland

Manchester City’s Premier League title charge slowed on New Year’s Day as they were held to a 0–0 draw by Sunderland, who maintained their unbeaten home record this season.

Match Highlight

City dominated possession but failed to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Sunderland side. Pep Guardiola’s men arrived on an eight-game winning run in all competitions but could not turn control into goals.

City thought they had taken an early lead when Bernardo Silva scored in the sixth minute, but the effort was ruled out for offside after a VAR check. Sunderland threatened on the counter, with Brian Brobbey forcing a save from Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 19th minute.

After the break, City raised the tempo. Savinho missed two clear chances, while substitute Josko Gvardiol added urgency down the flank. Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs produced a string of fine saves to keep his side level.

The hosts nearly snatched a late winner on the counter, while City came closest when Gvardiol’s flick skimmed the post in the closing stages. Erling Haaland remained well marshalled throughout.

The draw leaves Manchester City second in the table, four points behind leaders Arsenal. Sunderland continued their impressive campaign, with captain Granit Xhaka praising his side’s energy and collective effort after the match.
