Novak Djokovic rolled back the years to defeat two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner and become the oldest man to reach an Australian Open final. The 10-time Melbourne champion rallied to win 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a gripping four-hour semi-final on Friday night.
Epic Battle
Four months shy of his 39th birthday, Djokovic matched Sinner blow for blow in a contest of relentless intensity. The Serb recovered twice from a set down to overcome the world number two, ending Sinner’s five-match winning streak against him.
Melbourne Memories
Djokovic said the encounter reminded him of some of the greatest matches of his career.
“It feels surreal to be honest playing over four hours,” he said on court. “I was reminiscing in 2012 when I played Rafa in the final. The level of intensity and quality was high and that was the only way to have a chance to win.”
He also praised his opponent, adding,
“Tremendous respect, an incredible player. He deserves applause for his performance.”
Decisive Moments
There was no fortune involved in the victory. Djokovic saved multiple break points in the fifth set before finally breaking Sinner at 3-3 with a series of punishing rallies. He then survived another three break points in the following game, sealing it with an ace. Serving for the match at 5-4, Djokovic created two match points with a forehand down the line before dropping to his knees in celebration.
Final Set
The win sends Djokovic into Sunday’s final against world number one Carlos Alcaraz, who earlier edged Alexander Zverev in the longest men’s semi-final in Australian Open history. Eighteen years after lifting his first Melbourne title, Djokovic will now chase a record-extending 11th Australian Open crown and a historic 25th Grand Slam singles title.
Sinner Reaction
Sinner admitted the defeat was painful after missing key opportunities.
“It was a good match from both of us. I had many chances. I couldn’t use them, and that’s the outcome,” he said
“He’s won 24 Grand Slams. I’m never surprised by his level. He’s been the greatest player for many, many years. Hopefully I can take away some kind of lesson from this.”
