Emiliano Buendía came off the bench to seal a 2-1 comeback victory for Aston Villa against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. The win continued Villa’s impressive resurgence in the Premier League.
Tottenham struck early when Rodrigo Bentancur netted in the 5th minute after a well-placed cross from Mohammed Kudus. Villa responded in the 37th, with Morgan Rogers unleashing a long-range effort that beat Guglielmo Vicario.
The decisive moment came in the 78th minute. After a diagonal ball from Matty Cash found Lucas Digne, Buendía curled a precise finish into the bottom corner to hand the visitors the lead and all three points. The win lifts Villa to 10th in the Premier League standings with 12 points, while Tottenham fall to 6th, behind Chelsea on goal difference.
Unai Emery praised Rogers’ consistency, saying, “He always does his tasks, always.” Spurs boss Thomas Frank acknowledged the quality of Villa’s two goals and lamented missed chances, saying, “Villa scored two goals from outside the box in moments where you wouldn’t expect them to score. Fair play for their moments of quality.”
Villa’s recent form has stood in contrast to their slow start; this marks their fifth straight win in all competitions. Tottenham, meanwhile, continue to struggle for consistency at home, having won just three of their last 18 league games on their own turf.
