Fifth seed Lorenzo Musetti defeated American Taylor Fritz 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 at Rod Laver Arena to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals for the first time. The Italian’s victory sets up a clash with 10-time champion Novak Djokovic.
Fresh from a five-set win over Tomas Machac, Musetti showed no signs of fatigue. He broke twice in the opening set and controlled the match with sharp returns and creative variations.
“Honestly, I feel very proud,” Musetti said. “I know Taylor very well, we’ve played many matches. Last time in Turin he was the winner.”
Confidence and Momentum
Musetti raised his level late in the second set, winning three consecutive games before breaking early in the third. He credited a more aggressive mindset for his performance.
“I came here with a different mentality,” he said. “I improved a lot on serve and being more aggressive with the forehand.”
Djokovic advanced earlier after Jakub Mensik withdrew with an abdominal injury. Looking ahead, Musetti added:
“Every time we play, it’s a lesson. Hopefully the rhythm I have right now will bring me luck. I feel ready to push him to the maximum.”
