Manchester City claimed a commanding 2–0 away victory over Newcastle United on Tuesday to take charge of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie.
Match Highlight
January signing Antoine Semenyo continued his impressive start at City, opening the scoring in the 53rd minute with a simple tap-in from Jeremy Doku’s cross. The £65m arrival from Bournemouth has now scored in back-to-back appearances. He thought he had added a second, but VAR ruled his effort narrowly offside after a lengthy check.
Newcastle started the second half strongly and went close twice in quick succession. James Trafford tipped Yoane Wissa’s effort onto the crossbar before Bruno Guimaraes struck the woodwork moments later. City survived the pressure and gradually regained control.
Pep Guardiola’s side found breathing space deep into stoppage time. Rayan Cherki finished calmly from a low cut-back on the left to cap a composed City display.
Key Stat & What’s Next
Semenyo is the first City player since Emmanuel Adebayor in 2009 to score in his first two appearances for the club in all competitions, following his FA Cup goal against Exeter. The second leg will be played on February 4.
