Manchester United have appointed former midfielder Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, as the club looks to steady itself amid a difficult campaign.
Carrick Takes Charge
The 44-year-old replaces Darren Fletcher, who was placed in temporary charge for three matches after Amorim’s sacking. Fletcher failed to record a win during his brief spell, overseeing a 2–2 Premier League draw with Burnley and a 2–1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton.
Carrick’s first game in charge will be a daunting Manchester derby on Saturday, with United hosting second-placed Manchester City at Old Trafford. United currently sit seventh in the Premier League, 17 points adrift of leaders Arsenal, and have already been eliminated from both domestic cup competitions.
Familiar Role
This is not Carrick’s first stint as caretaker manager at Old Trafford. He previously held the role in 2021 following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. British media reported that both Carrick and Solskjaer were considered for the interim position earlier this month before Fletcher was appointed.
United Pedigree
Carrick made 464 appearances during a decorated playing career at Manchester United, winning five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League. His managerial résumé includes a spell at Middlesbrough, where he guided the club from 21st to fourth in the Championship during the 2022–23 season, though subsequent mid-table finishes led to his dismissal last June.
