Seven-time champions Egypt booked their place in the AFCON 2025 quarter-finals after a hard-fought 3–1 extra-time victory over Benin Republic in their round-of-16 clash.

Egypt looked set for a narrow win when Marwan Attia broke the deadlock in the 69th minute with a superb curling effort from 25 metres. However, Benin refused to go quietly and forced extra time after Jodel Dossou bundled home a late equaliser.
The Pharaohs regained control seven minutes into extra time. Defender Yasser Ibrahim scored his first international goal, rising to meet Attia’s cross before sending a looping header into the top corner. Mohamed Salah then sealed the win with the final kick of the match, racing clear on a counter-attack and calmly beating the back-pedalling goalkeeper from distance.
It was a very difficult match; Benin are a tough opponent. We are mentally prepared to play for 90 minutes or extra time. I have confidence in my team and my staff, especially the medical team, for a proper recovery before the next match.

Benin coach Gernot Rohr praised his side despite the defeat. “When you take the individual talents of the Egyptians, it’s not the same,” he said.
Egypt faces concerns over a possible serious knee injury to left-back Mohamed Hamdi. They will meet either defending champions Ivory Coast or Burkina Faso in Saturday’s quarter-final in Agadir.
