Lagosians Speak On The Rising Cost Of Detty December

Lagosians React to Rising Costs of Detty December

Every December, Lagos transforms into a global party hub, with concerts, beach festivals, club nights, and private raves filling the social calendar. The season attracts Nigerians in the diaspora and international visitors who return home to celebrate the holidays in grand style.

Rising Costs Worry Local Residents

However, rising costs have become a major concern for many Lagos residents. Event tickets, table reservations, hotel rooms, and transportation prices often triple during December. For residents earning in naira, these costs feel increasingly out of reach, while visitors earning in dollars or pounds can spend more freely. As a result, premium events now appear tailored to foreign wallets rather than local realities.

From Inclusive To Exclusive Celebrations

This pricing gap has gradually shifted the atmosphere of Detty December. Events that once felt inclusive are now viewed as exclusive. For instance, tickets for Asake’s Lagos headline show sold for as high as ₦300,000, a sharp contrast to similar major concerts in 2024, where top-tier tickets were significantly cheaper.

Similar trends have been observed at headline shows by artistes such as Davido, Wizkid, and Rema, with premium tickets and table reservations now costing far more than in previous years.

Mixed Reactions From Lagos Residents

HipTV spoke with Lagos residents to understand how the changes have affected their Detty December experience. Opinions were divided. Some residents believe the season still boosts the economy and creates opportunities for vendors.

We Nigerians enjoy Detty December more, and it is based on the economy. It helps vendors sell, and we enjoy it more, a Lagos respondent said.

Others highlighted the social and networking benefits the season offers. “December is always vibrant,” another resident noted.

Still, concerns remain. Some residents pointed to personal spending limits, saying that enjoyment now largely depends on individual budgets.

It feels like Detty December favours foreigners. But Nigerians will always find a way to have fun, a person told HipTV.
