The Premier League has agreed to move two key December fixtures for Arsenal and Crystal Palace to allow better rest prior to their League Cup quarter-final. The change was announced on Tuesday.
Arsenal will now face Everton away on Saturday, December 20, instead of the original date of December 21. Crystal Palace’s clash against Leeds United has been moved from December 21 to the same day, December 20.
Both London clubs have a busy schedule. Arsenal are juggling domestic and European fixtures, while Palace contend with Premier League, Conference League and League Cup commitments. The quarter-final between the two clubs is set for Tuesday, December 23.
In a statement the Premier League said: “Player welfare is a priority … we have granted requests from Arsenal and Crystal Palace to move their respective fixtures.” The league also highlighted that the expanded European competitions are impacting domestic fixtures.
Arsenal argued the original schedule violated FIFA’s recommendation of at least 72 hours’ rest between matches. They rejected an alternative date of December 24 for the quarter-final, citing fan and transport issues.
The revamped calendar gives both teams an extra rest day ahead of the cup tie.
