Felabration-2025-Shakara

The rhythms of Afrobeat once again took over Lagos as Felabration 2025 pays tribute to Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the man, the music, and the movement.

As the rhythm of Afrobeat echoes through Lagos, one festival stands out as a testament to the enduring legacy of Fela Anikulapo Kuti: Felabration.

About Felabration

Felabration is an annual festival celebrating the life and legacy of Nigeria’s iconic musician and activist, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Conceived by Fela’s eldest child, Yeni Kuti, in 1998, this week-long event takes place at the New Afrika Shrine, connecting thousands of visitors from across the world.

It has been recognised as an official tourist attraction by the Lagos State Government. Felabration has hosted renowned international artists and features a diverse range of events, including debates, dance competitions, art exhibitions, and street parades, all designed to honour Fela’s immense cultural and social impact.

This year’s theme, “Shakara”, channels the confidence, rebellion, and creative fire that defined Fela’s enduring legacy.

It took place from 13th to 19th October 2025; the festival kicked off with The Fela Debate at NECA Hall, Ikeja.

The Fela Debate: “Water No Get Enemy”

Moderated by former senator Ben Murray-Bruce, this year’s debate was themed after one of Fela’s most poignant songs, “Water No Get Enemy”. The discussion explored the link between art, governance, and sustainability and how creativity can help build a more equitable Africa.

The debate session featured a keynote address by Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, alongside the panellists, which included Festus Okubor of the Shell Foundation and Ekuma Eze of Rite Foods. They shared their insights on innovation, environmental responsibility, and the creative economy.

Vibrant Pre-Events & Citywide Celebrations

Before the main events, Lagos was already beaming with pre-Felabration activities, from the Dress Fela fashion competition and school debates to art exhibitions and the aerobics dance competition, which brought Fela’s colourful aesthetic to life. The energy and gaze shifted to the festival’s spiritual homes, the New Afrika Shrine and Freedom Park, for nights of electrifying concerts, workshops, and cultural showcases.

Performances and Artists Lineup

Audiences present at Felabration 2025 were thrilled by performances from Fela’s musical heirs Femi Kuti and Made Kuti alongside other acclaimed artists such as Terry Apala, Kashcoming, Berri Tiga, Centinno, and Boysarm Parody.

Other performers included Orezi, Ladipoe, Peruzzi, Duncan Mighty, Small Doctor, Modola, Atawewe, Barry Jhay, and May D, ensuring an unforgettable celebration of Afrobeat and contemporary Nigerian sound.

A Celebration of Legacy and Love

“It’s incredible to see Felabration turn 25, and it just keeps getting better every year! We’re here to celebrate Fela, his music, and his message with joy and gratitude. I hope that the next 25 years will be even more festive and inspiring. I’m 64 now, so by the time we’re celebrating 50 years of Felabration, I’ll be 89 and I plan to still be dancing.”
