The participation of the Iranian national football team in the 2026 World Cup has been thrown into extreme doubt following the outbreak of war in the Middle East. The Iranian Football Federation (FFI) has signaled it may boycott the tournament.
Iran is scheduled to play its Group G matches against:
- Belgium
- Egypt
- New Zealand
The matches are set to take place in Los Angeles and Seattle.
Escalation of Conflict
The United States and Israel, on February 28, launched airstrikes on Iran’s military facilities and took out the country’s political leadership.
Iran’s retaliatory attacks on Israel, US assets, and Gulf allies have cast doubt on the possibility of its participation in the World Cup tournament.
FFI President Speaks
Mehdi Taj, President of the FFI, has cited the “viciousness” of the attacks as a total barrier to sporting competition.
“With what happened today and with that attack by the United States, it is unlikely that we can look forward to the cup,” he said.
He added that while the team had earned its place on the pitch, the political climate had made participation nearly impossible.
“It is far from our expectations that we can look at the World Cup with hope.”
Trump’s Reaction
U.S. President Donald Trump has remained characteristically defiant regarding the potential absence of Iran from the mundial.
When questioned by reporters about the prospect of Iran missing the tournament, Trump was blunt in his assessment:
“I really don’t care.”
FIFA’s Contingency Plans
The geopolitical tension presents a significant nightmare for FIFA, as the tournament is less than four months away. Security concerns have skyrocketed, particularly as Iran was slated to play in cities with large diaspora populations.
FIFA is activating contingency plans to replace Iran should they officially forfeit their spot. Under FIFA Regulation 6.7, the governing body holds the “sole discretion” to fill vacancies.
The most likely replacements from the Asian confederation are:
- Iraq
- United Arab Emirates
A formal decision is expected within the next 30 days.
