The governing body World Athletics said that two of its employees and a contracted consultant systematically stole more than €1.5 million over several years.
The theft was uncovered during the organisation’s first annual audit under new financial leadership, prompting an internal investigation and contract terminations. The individuals identified include former COO Vineesh Kochhar and former broadcast director James Lord, plus a consultant who held no managerial role.
“Detailed cases have been prepared and handed over to the relevant judicial and legal authorities for criminal investigation,” World Athletics said in a statement. An independent forensic review found no further fraudulent activity beyond the identified theft.
President Sebastian Coe said the body would use “the full force of the law” to recover stolen funds and stressed the importance of transparency and governance.
World Athletics reported revenue of US $59.8 million, a 10.5 % increase year-on-year, in its latest annual report. The organisation said it is implementing enhanced internal financial controls to prevent future fraud.
