Public opinion remains divided following the online clash between Wizkid and Seun Kuti, with many Nigerians rejecting comparisons between the Afrobeats star and Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
In a vox pop conducted by HipTV after the Wizkid–Seun Kuti exchange, one respondent said both artistes are talented but insisted that comparing Wizkid to Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is inappropriate. The respondent criticised Seun Kuti for going too far in the way he addressed Wizkid, while noting that Wizkid’s response, though harsh, was an emotional reaction.
“Both artistes are talented, but comparing Wizkid to Fela is not appropriate. Seun Kuti went too far in the way he addressed Wizkid, while Wizkid’s response reflected how he felt at the time.”
Fela’s Era Stands Alone
Another respondent rejected any attempt to compare Wizkid with Fela, saying Fela’s era stands on its own. The interviewee described the late Afrobeat pioneer as a respected freedom fighter whose influence cannot be replicated.
“Any attempt to compare Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s era with another is inappropriate. He was widely respected as a freedom fighter.”
Seun Kuti’s Activism Recognised
One participant said the debate is not about Wizkid at all, arguing that Seun Kuti’s activism reflects the same commitment to Nigeria shown by his father. The respondent stated that while Fela and Seun fight for national issues, other artistes focus mainly on entertainment.
“My focus is not on Wizkid. Seun Kuti continues the fight for Nigeria, just as his father did, while many other artistes concentrate mainly on entertainment.”
Keep The Dispute Between Wizkid And Seun
Another interviewee felt Seun Kuti should have ignored public commentary altogether and criticised the involvement of Fela’s name in the exchange. The respondent insisted that any disagreement should remain between Wizkid and Seun, without extending it to Fela.
“Seun Kuti should not be concerned with public opinions. Any discussion should be between him and Wizkid, without involving Fela.”
Fela’s Legacy Remains Unmatched
One respondent completely dismissed the comparison, saying no Nigerian musician can be measured against Fela’s legacy. The interviewee stressed that Fela’s message remains relevant and unmatched.
“There is no valid comparison. No Nigerian musician has achieved what Fela did, and his message remains relevant.”
Different Levels, Different Purposes
Another participant called for an end to comparisons, saying Wizkid and Fela exist on different levels with different purposes. The respondent argued that each artiste should be judged within their own space.
“Comparisons are unnecessary. They operate in different spaces, with distinct callings and musical styles.”
Wizkid Represents The Future
One respondent, however, held a contrasting view, arguing that Wizkid represents the future of Nigerian music. The interviewee said changing times and global reach should shape how impact is measured today.
“The industry has evolved. Fela belongs to the past, while Wizkid represents the future, and that is what many people are focusing on.”
