West Ham United reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Monday after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Brentford FC.
Defender Konstantinos Mavropanos converted the decisive spot kick in a 5–3 penalty shootout win. The match ended 2–2 after normal time, sending the tie to extra time and eventually penalties.
West Ham will host Leeds United in the quarter-finals on April 4.
Bowen Opens the Scoring
Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring in the 19th minute after Brentford failed to fully clear a corner, allowing the West Ham captain to steer the ball home from close range.
Brentford responded nine minutes later when a header from Nathan Collins glanced off the midriff of Igor Thiago and drifted into the net.
West Ham quickly restored their advantage after Michael Kayode tripped Adama Traore in the box, with Bowen converting the resulting penalty.
Brentford Fight Back
Brentford pushed for another equaliser and found it late in the match. Crysencio Summerville pushed Kayode in the back to concede a penalty.
Thiago stepped up to convert in the 81st minute, forcing extra time after the fifth-round tie ended level.
Extra Time Drama
Both teams created chances in extra time but neither could find a winner, sending the contest to a shootout.
Bowen and Taty Castellanos scored for West Ham, while Thiago converted again for Brentford before the pivotal moment arrived.
Dango Ouattara attempted a chipped Panenka penalty that was calmly caught by West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.
Mavropanos Seals the Victory
Callum Wilson and Tomas Soucek both converted for West Ham, while Keane Lewis-Potter and Mathias Jensen kept Brentford in contention.
Mavropanos then blasted the final penalty into the top corner to seal victory.
Bowen Reacts to the Win
“Confidence comes from winning games; okay, we didn’t win the game on the night, but we won it on penalties, which makes it a little bit more special to enjoy it as a team,” Bowen told reporters.
He added:
“Leeds are a really, really good side as well… but we want to get to the final, we want silverware at this club.”
