Paris Saint-Germain defeated Tottenham Hotspur 5-3 in a dramatic Champions League match at Parc des Princes on Wednesday.
Vitinha delivered a decisive hat-trick to help the holders extend their strong start to the campaign.
Tottenham produced an energetic first-hour display that contrasted sharply with their disappointing performance in the north London derby against Arsenal. Their positive approach paid off when Richarlison headed in from close range after 35 minutes, capitalising on a knockdown from Kolo Muani. PSG, however, equalised seconds before halftime when Vitinha met a pass from academy graduate Quentin Ndjantou and fired a powerful shot high beyond goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
Five minutes after the restart, Tottenham scored as Kolo Muani converted from inside the area following a loose clearance from PSG defender Willian Pacho. That goal triggered PSG’s strongest spell of the night, with the hosts scoring three times in 12 minutes. Vitinha levelled the match once again in the 53rd minute with a curling left-foot finish, his second of the evening.
PSG then completed their turnaround when Fabian Ruiz capitalised on a Tottenham mistake. Midfielder Pape Matar Sarr lost possession on the edge of the box, allowing Ruiz to steer home the hosts’ third. Pacho added a fourth soon after, reacting quickest during a moment of defensive confusion in the Tottenham penalty area. Tottenham briefly revived their hopes when Kolo Muani struck his second goal in the 72nd minute.
Those hopes were short-lived, as a handball by Cristian Romero awarded PSG a penalty four minutes later. Vitinha converted calmly from the spot to complete his hat-trick and give PSG a decisive two-goal cushion. The French side finished the match with ten men after substitute Lucas Hernandez was sent off in stoppage time for an elbow on Xavi Simons.
The result keeps PSG second in the league phase standings and on track for direct qualification to the round of sixteen. Tottenham, meanwhile, drop to sixteenth with eight points and now face increased pressure in their next fixture against Slavia Prague as they seek to stabilise their campaign.
