Arsenal secured a convincing 3-1 win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday to go top of the Champions League group.
The Gunners struck first in the 22nd minute when Jurrien Timber powered home a header from a corner, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. But Bayern responded just ten minutes later when 17-year-old Lennart Karl capitalised on a slick build-up to level the score before halftime.
Arsenal dominated the second half, showing both tactical discipline and energy. Substitutes Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli turned the game around with crucial strikes. Madueke restored the lead in the 69th minute after a precise cross from Riccardo Calafiori. Eight minutes later, Martinelli punished a defensive error by Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer, rounding him and slotting the ball into an empty net to seal the win.
Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, voted Man of the Match, said afterwards, “We went man to man with them in the second half, and I thought tonight we were outstanding.”
The result is Arsenal’s fifth win in five group games, leaving them with a perfect 15 points and on course for a spot in the knockout phase. Bayern, meanwhile, suffered its first loss of the season and dropped to third in the group standings on 12 points.
Manager Mikel Arteta hailed the performance as a “massive victory” and praised the team’s depth. He said, “Individually, we were immense. Today is another massive victory.”
“I have to congratulate Arsenal; in the end, it was a deserved win for them,” Bayern coach Vincent Kompany graciously said.
