Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach on a five-year contract. He becomes Tottenham’s third manager this season following Igor Tudor’s brief interim spell.
The former Brighton and Marseille manager joins the club with Spurs currently seventeenth in the league, just one point above the relegation zone.
Long-Term Vision Seals Appointment
Despite earlier reports suggesting he would wait until the summer to return to management, the length of the deal running until 2031, and the club’s persistence proved decisive.
“I am here because I believe in that ambition and have signed a long-term contract to give everything to deliver it,” De Zerbi said.
“Our short term priority is to climb the Premier League table, which will be the complete focus until the final whistle of the last game.”
Club Backing and Strategic Decision
Sporting Director Johan Lange said De Zerbi had been the club’s primary target for a planned summer rebuild, but their current league position prompted an earlier move.
“Roberto was our number one target for the summer, and we are very pleased to bring him in now,” Lange stated.
“He is one of the most creative and forward-thinking coaches in world football.”
The appointment represents a significant commitment from the club, with reports indicating De Zerbi will be among the highest-paid managers in the division.
Managerial Changes and Immediate Challenge
The move follows a 44-day spell in charge for Igor Tudor, who oversaw five league matches before his departure.
Supporters have expressed concern over the number of managerial changes this season, but De Zerbi’s approach to attacking football is expected to bring renewed direction.
He is set to take charge of his first match on April 12, an away fixture against Sunderland, as he begins implementing his tactical approach under pressure.
Commitment Beyond Relegation Concerns
With no relegation break clause included in his contract, both the club and the manager are committed to a long-term project, regardless of the division next season.
“I am delighted to be joining this fantastic football club, which is one of the biggest and most prestigious in the world,” De Zerbi said.
