Italy clinched its third consecutive Davis Cup against Spain with a team-effort led by Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Cobolli on Sunday in Bologna.
Berrettini opened the tie with a composed 6-3 6-4 win over Pablo Carreno Busta, before Cobolli completed the job for Filippo Volandri’s side by rallying past Jaume Munar 1-6 7-6(5) 7-5.
The victory over six-time champions Spain delivered Italy’s fourth Davis Cup trophy, adding to titles from 1976, 2023 and 2024.
Team captain Filippo Volandri praised the resolve of the squad. “We believed in ourselves every step of the way,” he said, applauding both his veterans and youngsters for their strong contributions.
Both teams were missing key players, as Spain was without Carlos Alcaraz and Italy without Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti.
“It’s the third consecutive one. I’m crying. I didn’t cry for the first one. It’s unbelievable. This is a big, big team. Some of them not even here: Sinner, Musetti, (Matteo) Arnaldi,” Volandri said.
