Nigeria began their AFCON 2025 campaign with a 2–1 win over Tanzania on Tuesday night, easing early pressure after missing out on the 2026 World Cup.

The Super Eagles dominated possession but struggled to break down a compact Tanzanian defence. Victor Osimhen was denied by a goal-line clearance, while Wilfred Ndidi and Samuel Chukwueze tested goalkeeper Masudi.
The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when Semi Ajayi powered home a header from an Alex Iwobi cross.
Tanzania drew level five minutes after the restart. Charles M’Mombwa finished from close range to briefly unsettle the Nigerians.
Nigeria responded quickly. Ademola Lookman struck in the 52nd minute, firing a left-footed effort from outside the box to restore the lead.
Nigeria next face Tunisia before rounding off the group against Uganda.
