Spotify has officially announced acquiring of “WhoSampled”, a database that tracks for music discovery. The technology platform is known for its database of music samples, covers, and remixes.
WhoSampled, founded in 2008 by Nadav Poraz, documents the historical connections of songs by linking samples to their original sources. Whosample currently attracts over one million monthly users.
The centerpiece of the partnership is the upcoming launch of “SongDNA”, a new Spotify feature that will integrate WhoSampled’s technology directly into the streaming application. SongDNA will allow listeners to explore a track’s samples, covers, and historical connections in real-time while streaming.
Despite the acquisition, WhoSampled confirmed it will retain its independent brand and website, but will now benefit from Spotify’s global infrastructure. Immediate changes include the removal of all display advertisements, faster moderation of submissions, and making the iOS and Android apps free for users.
WhoSampled’s company statement confirmed the shared mission: “Through our recent discussions with Spotify, it became clear that we share a strong belief in the power of musical context – and a vision for helping listeners go deeper into the songs they love.”
The deal marks a significant step toward making music production history and attribution instantly accessible to Spotify’s hundreds of millions of users worldwide.
