The highly anticipated Finalissima clash between Spain national football team and Argentina national football team has been cancelled due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Match Planned For Doha
The match between the European and South American champions had been scheduled for March 27 at Lusail Stadium in Doha.
UEFA Statement On Cancellation
UEFA said discussions with Qatari organisers concluded that the match could not proceed because of the “current political situation” in the region.
The governing body said in a statement:
“It is a source of great disappointment to UEFA and the organisers that circumstances and timing have denied the teams of the chance to compete for this prestigious prize in Qatar,”
Alternative Venues Considered
UEFA added that alternative venues were explored but were ultimately rejected by the Argentine Football Association.
Options included staging the match at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid with a 50-50 supporter split or playing the contest over two legs between Madrid and Buenos Aires.
Spain Still Willing To Play
Meanwhile, the Royal Spanish Football Federation said Spain remained ready to play the match.
“From the very outset, the Federation has expressed its absolute commitment to ensuring this match goes ahead,” the federation said.
Previous Finalissima Edition
The previous edition of the Finalissima was held at Wembley Stadium in 2022, where Argentina defeated Italy national football team 3–0.
