South Africa sealed their place in the Africa Cup of Nations knockout stage with a dramatic 3–2 win over Zimbabwe in Group B on Monday, finishing second behind Egypt with six points.
Match Highlight
Bafana Bafana struck early through Tshepang Moremi, whose seventh-minute effort deflected past goalkeeper Washington Arubi. Zimbabwe responded in the 19th minute as Tawanda Maswanhise danced through the defence and fired home to level the score.
South Africa went back in front shortly after the restart when Lyle Foster outjumped Arubi to head in for a 2–1 lead. Zimbabwe refused to fold and drew level again in the 73rd minute after a defensive mix-up saw Aubrey Modiba turn the ball into his own net.
The turning point arrived in the 82nd minute when Zimbabwe’s Marvelous Nakamba was penalised for handball. Oswin Appollis calmly converted the resulting penalty to restore South Africa’s lead.
The victory confirmed South Africa’s progression to the last 16, while Zimbabwe exit the tournament with just one point from three matches.
