Senegal were crowned Africa Cup of Nations champions on Sunday after a dramatic 1–0 extra-time victory over hosts Morocco, overcoming a hostile atmosphere, controversial officiating, and late chaos to lift the AFCON 2025 title.
Final Marred by Controversy
The final was overshadowed by chaotic scenes deep into stoppage time. Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a penalty following a VAR review, ruling that El Hadji Malick Diouf had fouled Brahim Diaz while defending a corner.
Senegal coach Pape Bouna Thiaw reacted by ordering his players off the pitch in protest, sparking heated exchanges on the touchline. After a 14-minute delay, Captain Sadio Mane convinced his teammates to return and resume play.
Mendy Saves the Day
Morocco were handed a golden opportunity to decide the final from the spot, but Diaz failed to capitalise. His attempted Panenka penalty was weak and comfortably saved by Edouard Mendy, sending the match into extra time amid stunned silence.
Gueye Strikes in Extra Time
Senegal made their reprieve count almost immediately. In the 94th minute, midfielder Pape Gueye unleashed a powerful strike that beat Yassine Bounou, giving Senegal the decisive breakthrough.
“We really wanted to win here,” Gueye said. “It was a very difficult match, but we gave everything.”
What It Means
The victory delivers Senegal’s second AFCON title in three editions and hands Morocco their first defeat in 27 internationals. For the hosts, it extends a 50-year wait for continental glory.
