Egypt began their AFCON campaign with a dramatic 2–1 comeback victory over Zimbabwe on Monday, sealed by a stoppage-time goal from captain Mohammed Salah.
Early Shock And Egypt’s Response
Zimbabwe stunned the seven-time champions in the 20th minute when Prince Dube finished a swift counter-attack to give the Warriors a surprise lead. Egypt controlled possession but lacked a cutting edge before the break.
The Pharaohs drew level in the 64th minute through Omar Marmoush, who cut inside and finished from a tight angle after a strong solo run. Egypt then piled on pressure as Zimbabwe defended deep.
The breakthrough finally came in the 91st minute. Salah controlled a loose ball inside the box and calmly steered it home to secure all three points and spark celebrations.
Group B Standings
The win places Egypt top of Group B alongside South Africa, who earlier edged Angola 2–1. It also ends Egypt’s recent run of draws at the tournament.
Salah’s decisive goal comes amid recent scrutiny over his club situation and provides an early boost as Egypt chase a record-extending eighth AFCON title.
