World number one Aryna Sabalenka made a flying start to her 2026 season with a dominant win at the Brisbane International. In contrast, Nick Kyrgios’ long-awaited return to singles ended in defeat.
Sabalenka In a Rush
Sabalenka needed just 47 minutes to dismantle Spain’s Cristina Bucsa 6–0, 6–1 and move into the third round. The Belarusian barely put a foot wrong as she fine-tuned her preparations for the Australian Open.
Definitely my serve worked really well. I even did some serve-and-volleys, which surprised me. I’m super happy with the level.
Sabalenka said.
The defending Brisbane champion will next face either Sorana Cirstea or Jelena Ostapenko. Sabalenka is using the event as a build-up to Melbourne Park, where she will be chasing a third Australian Open title. The first Grand Slam of the year runs from January 18 to February 1.
Kyrgios’ Brief Return
Kyrgios’ comeback to singles competition lasted just 65 minutes. The Australian fell 6–3, 6–4 to American Aleksandar Kovacevic in his first singles match since March. The 30-year-old is working his way back after ongoing wrist and knee problems.
This is a stepping stone. As long as I feel good and can use it as a building block, that’s my goal.
Kyrgios said.
Kyrgios will remain in Brisbane and is set to feature in the doubles alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis as he continues his comeback.
