Rodri Fined £80K by The FA Over Referee Comments

Rodri has been fined £80,000 and issued a warning by The Football Association for comments he made about a referee following Manchester City’s 2–2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur last month.

Controversial Incident During the Match

Rodri criticised referee Robert Jones after Dominic Solanke’s goal was allowed to stand despite the player appearing to catch Marc Guehi from behind.

The incident was reviewed by the video assistant referee, but officials ruled that no foul had been committed.

Rodri Questions Referee Neutrality

Speaking after the match, Rodri questioned the referee’s neutrality.

“I know we won too much and the people don’t want us to win, but the referee has to be neutral,” he said. “It’s not fair because we work so hard. When everything is finished, you are frustrated.”

FA Charges and Decision

The FA charged the 29-year-old with acting in an improper manner during a post-match media interview by implying bias and questioning the integrity of match officials.

Rodri admitted the charge, though a regulatory commission ruled unanimously that the threshold for a playing suspension had not been met.

Rodri Responds to the Fine

In a letter submitted to the commission, Rodri wrote:

“My comments were made in a moment of frustration after a disappointing result”
