Real Madrid has formally informed Liverpool FC that they will not pursue a summer move for defender Ibrahima Konaté. this ends months of speculation linking the 26‑year‑old centre‑back with a transfer to the Spanish capital.
Konaté, whose contract with Liverpool expires in June 2026, had been on Madrid’s shortlist of potential free‑transfer targets as they planned for defensive reinforcements. But according to reports from The Athletic, Los Blancos have told Liverpool “unequivocally” that they have dropped the pursuit.
The decision comes amid a difficult season for Konaté and the Reds recent dips in form and costly defensive mistakes might have influenced Madrid’s change of heart. Meanwhile, Liverpool continue efforts to extend the defender’s stay. The club has made a new offer, though Konaté is yet to accept.
Real Madrid had previously completed the signing of another Liverpool defender, Trent Alexander-Arnold. Since joining from RB Leipzig in 2021, Konate has been an integral part of Liverpool’s squad. Without a new deal, he will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs from January.
