Real Madrid Beat Celta Vigo 2-1 as Valverde Scores Late Winner

Real Madrid secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Celta Vigo on Friday after Federico Valverde scored a deflected winner deep into stoppage time.

The victory ended Madrid’s two-game losing streak and cut FC Barcelona’s lead at the top of the table to one point, though Barcelona still have a game in hand.

Fast Start from Celta Vigo

Celta began the match brightly and nearly struck first when Borja Iglesias forced a one-handed save from Thibaut Courtois in the fifth minute.

Madrid, missing several key players including Kylian Mbappé, Rodrygo, Éder Militão and Jude Bellingham through injury, also came close when Vinícius Júnior struck the post during a counter-attack.

Madrid Take the Lead

Madrid went ahead in the 11th minute when Aurélien Tchouaméni finished first time from the middle of the box after a short corner worked by Arda Güler.

Celta’s Response

Celta equalised in the 25th minute. Williot Swedberg surged down the left and delivered a low cross for Borja Iglesias to convert from close range.

Late Drama Decides the Match

Chances were scarce after the break, with substitute Iago Aspas coming closest for the hosts when he hit the post in the 88th minute.

Just as the match appeared destined for a draw, Valverde unleashed a powerful long-range effort four minutes into added time that beat the goalkeeper to secure the win.

Title Race Tightens in La Liga

Real Madrid moved to 63 points, one behind Barcelona, who face Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

Manager Álvaro Arbeloa said the victory could prove significant in the title race.

“There’s still a long way to go in La Liga, with many points still up for grabs,” he said. “Our performance today was very commendable… Hopefully it will be a turning point.”
