Real Madrid booked their place in the Spanish Super Cup final after edging city rivals Atlético Madrid in a hard-fought semi-final clash in Jeddah on Thursday.
Match Highlight
Carlo Ancelotti’s side made a blistering start, taking the lead just 75 seconds into the contest. Federico Valverde curled a thunderous free kick from around 25 yards into the top corner, with Jan Oblak getting a hand to the effort but unable to keep it out.
Madrid remained dangerous on the counter and extended their lead 10 minutes after the restart. Valverde split Atlético’s defence with a precise through ball, allowing Rodrygo to calmly slot past Oblak.
Atlético quickly gave themselves hope. Giuliano Simeone delivered a cross to the back post, where Alexander Sorloth powered home a header just three minutes later to reduce the deficit.
The closing stages saw Atlético push hard for an equaliser. Oblak denied Rodrygo from close range, while Thibaut Courtois produced key saves to stop Antoine Griezmann and watched Marcos Llorente fire narrowly wide on two occasions. Despite the pressure, Real held on to seal the win.
What It Means
The victory sends Real Madrid into Sunday’s final, where they will face Barcelona in a repeat of last year’s Super Cup showdown, which Barça won.
