An amateur tennis player from Sydney, Jordan Smith, won a life-changing A$1 million prize after claiming victory at the inaugural One Point Slam exhibition event.
The tournament was staged ahead of the Australian Open at Rod Laver Arena.
Stunning Upset Run
Smith outlasted a field of 24 professionals and celebrities, including Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Iga Swiatek. He defeated Sinner and world number four Amanda Anisimova before edging Joanna Garland in the final.
“Coming into tonight, I was just happy to win one point,” Smith said.
He revealed plans to use the prize money to buy a house.
Unique Format and Dramatic Moments
The event featured a single-point elimination format, with rock, paper, scissors deciding serve or return. Amateurs were allowed two serves, while ranked players had just one.
Highlights included:
- Maria Sakkari eliminating Carlos Alcaraz
- Pedro Martinez beating Alexander Bublik with an underhand serve
- Garland knocking out Alexander Zverev and Nick Kyrgios
The Australian Open runs from January 18 to February 1.
