Norway Seal World Cup Berth As Italy Drop Into Playoffs

Norway qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday after a 4–0 win over Cyprus. This is the first time they will qualify in more than 20 years.

Erling Haaland headlined Norway’s triumph, scoring twice in the first half, including a powerful header, and adding another with a clever finish late. The third goal came from a lightning‑quick counter finished by Jens Petter Hauge, and Kristoffer Ajer completed the scoring with a long-range strike in stoppage time.

With 22 points from eight matches, Norway wrapped up top spot in Group G, finishing ahead of strong rivals like Belgium and Switzerland.

Norway boss Stale Solbakken praised his team’s belief and unity. “This journey has taken time, but we’ve built something special. Our fans deserve this,” he said.

Meanwhile, Italy were forced into the playoffs following a 0–0 draw with Malta.

Italy, meanwhile, were already guaranteed a place in the playoffs after their goalless draw in Valletta. The Azzurri’s failure to win left them second in Group C, tying with Ukraine on points but dropping out on goal difference.

Italian coach Luciano Spalletti expressed disappointment, saying, “Qualifying without a direct ticket is not the outcome we hoped for. We must regroup, prepare and seize the chance in the playoffs.”
