Nigerian film producers are increasingly using dance content creation as a promotional tool across social media platforms, particularly TikTok and Instagram, where short-form videos can reach millions within hours.
Some producers have launched official dance challenges tied to movie releases, encouraging fans to create and share their own versions online. Nollywood stars such as Funke Akindele have adopted this strategy for films like “Behind the Scenes”, combining dance clips with social media campaigns to generate buzz, attract younger audiences, and boost ticket sales.
Mixed Reactions From Nigerians
A HipTV vox pop has revealed mixed opinions among Nigerians regarding the growing trend of using dance content to market films.
Some viewers described dance challenges as a creative way to generate buzz and make movies more appealing online.
“I do think one way to get people’s attention is through dancing. The famous Bridgerton movie used dance to promote their movie. But when it comes to our people, they bring toxic ideas to it,” one respondent said.
Others noted that while dancing may not be mandatory, it remains an effective promotional tool.
“Dancing in movie production is more appealing. If they don’t want to do it, it’s fine, but it’s good to promote the movie,” another viewer stated.
Support For The Trend
Some respondents fully supported the approach, saying they see nothing wrong with it.
“I don’t see anything wrong with it, it is not a bad thing. Although some people don’t resonate with it, it is good for dancing,” a respondent said.
Another male participant added,
“They should be using dance to promote the movie.”
