The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has issued a public apology to fans following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The federation expressed regret over the national team’s “very poor returns” in the qualifying campaign.

In its statement, the NFF acknowledged that four out of 10 matches in the World Cup qualifiers were unacceptable and pledged to take “necessary measures” to strengthen the squad. The federation said it was committed to rebuilding and preparing a more competitive team for future tournaments.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali also spoke on the failure on Instagram:

“Painful! We all did our best for the badge; though our best wasn’t enough … we take full responsibility.”

Critics have accused the NFF leadership of mismanagement and urged changes. Former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi has previously stated that “the whole board of the NFF has to go” if the team continues to underperform.
