Neymar Jr will undergo knee surgery. This comes shortly after he played through pain to help Santos FC avoid relegation against Cruzeiro on Sunday.
The 33-year-old returned to his childhood club in January after a stint at the Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal. He played a key role in Santos’ survival by scoring five goals in the final four matches of the season.
Santos secured their top-flight status with a 3-0 win over Cruzeiro on Sunday. Neymar, despite a persistent knee problem, spent the full 90 minutes on the pitch.
“I came for this, to try to help the best way I can. These have been tough weeks for me,” Neymar said after the match. “I … need to rest and then we will have this knee surgery.” he added.
Details on the surgery and expected recovery time are unknown. The procedure casts doubt on Neymar’s availability for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled for June and July next year in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Neymar has not featured for the Brazil national football team since October 2023 where he played against Uruguay due to persistent injuries.
