Mozambique End Long AFCON Wait With 3–2 Win Over Gabon

Mozambique claimed a historic 3–2 victory over Gabon in their Africa Cup of Nations Group F clash, ending a decades-long wait for a win at the tournament.

Game Overview

The Mambas produced a spirited display to secure their first AFCON victory in nearly 40 years, lifting them firmly back into contention in Group F.

Mozambique struck first in the 37th minute when Faisal Bangal headed home Geny Catamo’s corner. Catamo then doubled the lead from the penalty spot after captain Elias Pelembe was fouled in the box. Gabon pulled one back before halftime through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after a long-range effort was spilled by the goalkeeper, keeping the contest alive.

Mozambique restored their two-goal cushion early in the second half as Diogo Calila powered in a well-placed header. A late strike from Alex Moucketou-Moussounda gave Gabon hope, but they could not find an equaliser
