Morocco moved a step closer to a first Africa Cup of Nations title in 50 years after a composed 2–0 win over Cameroon on Friday, booking their place in the semi-finals.
Brahim Diaz Stays Red-Hot
Brahim Diaz continued his remarkable form, scoring for a fifth consecutive AFCON match to give Morocco the lead in the 26th minute. Achraf Hakimi’s corner was headed goalwards by Ayoub El Kaabi, with Diaz reacting quickest to turn the ball home from close range.
Ismael Saibari Seals It
The contest was low on clear chances, but Morocco made their control count in the 74th minute. Ismael Saibari was left unmarked at the back post and took full advantage, drilling a low finish into the far corner to double the lead. Morocco registered just three shots on target, converting two with clinical efficiency.
Cameroon Frustration
Cameroon struggled to break down Morocco’s disciplined defence and failed to register a single save from goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. The Indomitable Lions felt aggrieved when second-half penalty appeals were waved away after Bryan Mbeumo appeared to be fouled in the area, but their protests came to nothing.
What’s Next
Morocco will face the winner of Saturday’s quarter-final between Algeria and Nigeria in Rabat on Wednesday. There was late concern for the Atlas Lions, however, as Diaz was forced off with a heavily strapped thigh late in the match.
