Kylian Mbappe struck a dramatic penalty deep into stoppage time to secure a 2-1 victory for Real Madrid over Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. The French forward calmly converted in the 100th minute after Brahim Diaz was brought down in the box.
Red Cards and Madrid Struggles
The match was bad-tempered and ended with Rayo reduced to nine men. Pathe Ciss was shown a straight red card in the 80th minute for a dangerous challenge on Dani Ceballos. Pep Chavarria was also dismissed for a second booking in the closing moments.
Despite the numerical advantage, Real Madrid struggled to break down their stubborn neighbours until Mbappe’s late intervention.
Early Injury Blow for Real Madrid
Madrid suffered a major setback when Jude Bellingham was forced off after just nine minutes. The England midfielder left the pitch in tears with a suspected hamstring injury.
Vinicius Jr Opens the Scoring
Real Madrid still took the lead in the 16th minute through Vinicius Jr. He produced a moment of individual brilliance, skipping past Andrei Ratiu before curling a sublime shot in off the underside of the crossbar.
Rayo Fight Back in Second Half
Rayo Vallecano drew level in the 49th minute. Alvaro Garcia nodded Gerard Gumbau’s cross back into the danger area, allowing Jorge de Frutos to fire a first-time effort past Thibaut Courtois.
The equaliser heightened tension inside the stadium as Madrid squandered multiple chances. Vinicius missed a free header, while Mbappe hit the crossbar after rounding goalkeeper Augusto Batalla.
Late Penalty Seals Victory
As the boos grew louder, Real Madrid finally found salvation in added time. Nobel Mendy clumsily fouled Brahim Diaz inside the area.
Mbappe stepped up and drilled his penalty into the bottom corner to spark relief and celebration.
“Winning always brings happiness. The energy changes quite a bit,” captain Federico Valverde said. “The most important thing is to improve, grow as a team and be calmer. We must improve in attack and score more goals.”
League Table Impact
The win keeps Real Madrid second in LaLiga with 54 points, trailing leaders Barcelona. Rayo Vallecano remain 17th with 22 points.
