Gabriel Martinelli netted a hat-trick as Arsenal recovered from an early scare to secure a comfortable FA Cup third-round victory over Portsmouth.
Match Highlight
Arsenal were caught cold just three minutes in when Colby Bishop gave Portsmouth a surprise lead. The striker reacted quickest to fire home a rebound after Kepa Arrizabalaga had made an initial save against a heavily rotated Gunners side.
The visitors responded soon after and drew level from a corner. Christian Nørgaard’s delivery caused confusion in the box, and the ball deflected into the net off Portsmouth midfielder Andre Dozzell.
Arsenal gradually asserted their dominance and took the lead in the 25th minute. Martinelli rose to glance Noni Madueke’s corner into the net for his first of the night.
Madueke had a chance to extend the advantage before the break but saw his penalty saved after he was fouled by Zak Swanson.
Martinelli continued to torment the Portsmouth defence after the interval. He grabbed his second with a simple close-range finish following a low cross from Gabriel Jesus.
The Brazilian completed his hat-trick in the 72nd minute, once again capitalising on a corner. He flicked the ball in at the near post to put the result beyond doubt and send Arsenal safely through.
Historic Debut
The match also marked a landmark moment for Arsenal. Defender Marli Salmon became the club’s youngest-ever FA Cup player, featuring at just 16 years and 135 days.
Arsenal progress to the fourth round with confidence, while Portsmouth exit after a spirited but ultimately outmatched performance.
