Manchester United have dismissed manager Ruben Amorim, bringing an end to his turbulent 14-month spell at Old Trafford following inconsistent league form and mounting pressure.
Decision Follows Leeds Draw
The Portuguese coach was sacked on Monday, just a day after insisting he would not resign following a frustrating 1-1 Premier League draw with Leeds United. United currently sit sixth in the table, 17 points behind leaders Arsenal after 20 matches, and are drifting away from the title race.
“In light of Manchester United’s current league position, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change,” the club said in a statement. “This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”
Difficult Spell At Old Trafford
Appointed in November 2024 to replace Erik ten Hag, Amorim struggled to steady the club. He oversaw United’s worst league finish since relegation in 1974, ending last season in 15th place, and also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.
This campaign showed only marginal improvement. United managed just three wins from their last 11 games, a run that intensified scrutiny and ultimately led to the club’s decision.
Amorim’s Final Words
Pressure boiled over after the Leeds draw, when Amorim reacted defiantly to questions about his future.
I came here to be the manager, not the coach. I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me, he said.
Amorim departs having won 24 of his 63 matches in charge.
What’s Next
Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has been placed in interim charge. He will lead the team for Wednesday’s Premier League trip to Burnley as the club begins its search for a new permanent manager.
