Manchester United climbed to fifth place in the Premier League with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.
Match Highlights
Patrick Dorgu scored the only goal of the contest in the 24th minute, netting his first goal for the club to secure all three points for Erik ten Hag’s side. Dorgu capitalised on a partially cleared long throw-in, reacting quickest to side-foot home from close range.
It was a good hit. I didn’t know I could do that, but I was very happy to score my first goal in this stadium. I just looked at the ball, saw it drop, and I hit it, Dorgu said.
Despite missing key players, including captain Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, and Amad Diallo due to injury and Africa Cup of Nations commitments, United defended resolutely. Newcastle dominated possession after the break and registered 16 shots but could not find a way past the hosts.
The visitors came close late on, with Anthony Gordon and Lewis Miley both missing from promising positions. However, United’s back line held firm under sustained pressure to preserve the narrow lead.
The win lifts Manchester United to 29 points from 18 matches, moving them up to fifth in the table. Newcastle remain 11th on 23 points after failing to convert their second-half dominance into a result.
