Manchester City swept past Newcastle United with a 3-1 win at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday to seal a 5-1 aggregate victory and book their place in the Carabao Cup final.
Omar Marmoush starred with two goals, while Tijjani Reijnders also found the net as Pep Guardiola’s side dominated from start to finish.
Marmoush Fires City Into Early Control
Needing a fast start after losing the first leg 2-0, Newcastle were undone within the opening six minutes. Marmoush’s strike deflected off Dan Burn and looped into the net to give City an early breakthrough.
The Egyptian forward doubled the lead soon after, rising to head home from Antoine Semenyo’s cross at close range. The goal took Marmoush’s tally to 12 goals this season, with five scored against Newcastle at the Etihad.
Relentless Pressure Before The Break
City continued to overwhelm their visitors and added a third before halftime. Semenyo again turned provider, teeing up Reijnders, who finished clinically to put the tie beyond doubt.
Guardiola’s side moved the ball sharply and pressed relentlessly, leaving Newcastle struggling to cope with the pace and intensity.
Newcastle Rally Falls Short
Newcastle showed some fight after the interval and pulled one back shortly after the hour mark. Anthony Elanga, introduced as a substitute, curled a neat finish beyond James Trafford.
Elanga later missed two clear chances to reduce the deficit further, while Erling Haaland went close at the other end as City comfortably managed the remainder of the match.
City Eye Silverware At Wembley
“We showed a very good mentality,” Marmoush told reporters. “From the first minute, we were very focused on the job. We are here to win trophies, and hopefully we can do it.”
Manchester City will face Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on March 22, setting up a reunion between Pep Guardiola and former assistant Mikel Arteta.
