Manchester City’s Premier League title push suffered another setback as they were held to a 1–1 draw by Brighton on Wednesday. It was City’s third consecutive league stalemate, further damaging their hopes of keeping pace with leaders Arsenal.
Match Highlight
City took the lead in the 41st minute through Erling Haaland. The striker converted a penalty after Jeremy Doku was fouled in the box by Diego Gomez, with the decision confirmed following a pitchside review. The goal was Haaland’s 150th for the club and also marked the Premier League’s 35,000th goal since the competition began in 1992.
Despite falling behind, Brighton were dangerous throughout, exploiting City’s makeshift defence. Pascal Gross forced Gianluigi Donnarumma into a fine save with a powerful header, while Georginio Rutter and Ferdi Kadioglu were both denied in one-on-one situations. The visitors got their reward in the 60th minute when Kaoru Mitoma curled a precise finish from the edge of the area to bring Brighton level.
City pushed hard for a winner. Bernardo Silva struck the post, while Haaland tested Bart Verbruggen with a series of efforts. Brighton also had chances to snatch victory late on, most notably when Diego Gomez missed from close range. In the end, both sides had to settle for a point.
Title Implications
The draw leaves City with three Premier League draws in a week and hands the initiative to Arsenal, who could move eight points clear with a win over Liverpool on Thursday. Pep Guardiola was forced into defensive improvisation due to injuries to Josko Gvardiol, Ruben Dias, and John Stones, handing academy defender Max Alleyne a debut. City’s faltering run has left their title ambitions hanging in the balance.
