Liverpool booked their place in the FA Cup fourth round with a 4-1 win over League One side Barnsley at Anfield on Monday. The result sets up a home tie against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Match Highlight
Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring in style in the ninth minute, firing a stunning long-range effort to cap a lively start. Barnsley had threatened early, with Davis Keillor-Dunn hitting the post inside 30 seconds, but Liverpool soon took control.
Frimpong doubled the lead in the 36th minute. Making his FA Cup debut, the defender unleashed a powerful left-footed strike that left the goalkeeper with no chance.
Szoboszlai then turned from scorer to culprit four minutes later. A careless backheel towards goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili instead gifted former Liverpool academy player Adam Phillips a simple finish to pull one back for Barnsley.
Liverpool regained full control late on. Substitute Florian Wirtz curled a fine effort into the top corner in the 84th minute. Hugo Ekitike added a fourth in stoppage time, finishing off a move created by Wirtz to seal the win.
Reaction
Barnsley felt aggrieved not to be awarded a penalty in the 61st minute, with manager Conor Hourihane booked for his protests and later describing Szoboszlai’s mistake as “disrespectful.” Liverpool boss Arne Slot dismissed that view, while Szoboszlai admitted fault.
“I made it hard for us with the easy mistake,” Szoboszlai said. “Football happens, we move on. We go to the next round.”
Liverpool now turn their attention to a fourth-round clash with Premier League rivals Brighton, as they continue their FA Cup campaign at Anfield.
