Liverpool Cruise Past Marseille 3-0 in Champions League

Liverpool produced a composed display to beat Olympique de Marseille 3–0 away on Wednesday, extending their unbeaten run to 13 matches in all competitions.

Szoboszlai Breaks The Deadlock

Arne Slot’s side controlled long spells of the contest at the Stade Vélodrome. The breakthrough arrived on the stroke of half-time when Dominik Szoboszlai caught the hosts out with a clever low free kick under the wall to give Liverpool a deserved lead.

Liverpool Maintain Control

Marseille showed greater urgency after the break but struggled to trouble Alisson Becker as Liverpool maintained their grip on the game. The visitors doubled their advantage in the 73rd minute when Jeremie Frimpong’s low cross deflected off goalkeeper Pau López Rulli and rolled into the net.

Liverpool wrapped up the victory deep into stoppage time. Szoboszlai turned provider, releasing Ryan Gravenberch, who squared the ball for Cody Gakpo to finish calmly.

Van Dijk Reaches Milestone

Captain Virgil van Dijk, making his 350th appearance for the club, praised the team’s discipline and work rate.

“If you win the ball between the lines then you have a chance. I’m pleased with the team, everybody put a shift in,” he said.

Reaction and Group Implications

The defeat leaves Marseille on nine points, still battling for a play-off place ahead of their final match against Club Brugge. Liverpool, meanwhile, sits fourth in the standings and will secure a last-16 spot with a victory over Qarabag.

Marseille defender Leonardo Balerdi acknowledged the challenge:

“It’s tough, they played a good game. They’re used to playing like this, and you can feel how difficult it is on the pitch.”
