Two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner eased into the third round of the Australian Open with a dominant 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win over James Duckworth on Thursday.
Sinner quickly took control of the match. He broke Duckworth early and raced through the opening set in just 26 minutes. His ball-striking from the baseline and relentless pressure on serve ensured there was no repeat of Duckworth’s 2021 Toronto victory over the Italian. The victory extends Sinner’s run to 27 straight Tour-level wins against Australian players.
Sinner’s Consistency Continues
“Every match is difficult, so happy to be in the next round,” Sinner said on court. “Very happy with my performance. I know how much work I’ve put in so the body feels good and the mind is in a good moment.”
The 22-year-old has now won his last 12 matches without dropping a set.
Duckworth offered greater resistance in the second set. However, Sinner’s controlled power proved decisive. A forehand winner earned the Italian a crucial break at 3-3, and the match steadily slipped away from the 34-year-old Australian.
Next Opponent
The end came swiftly in the third set as Sinner wrapped up victory with his 18th ace. Sinner now seals a last-32 meeting with American Eliot Spizzirri. Sinner has spent less than three hours on court so far in the tournament.
“I’ve been watching him also last year a little bit, very aggressive on the court and a big server,” Sinner said. “I’m hoping for a great match.”
